About this map

Alaska 511 runs roughly 144 traffic cameras and about 79 RWIS road-weather stations along the state's connected road system, and our live map pulls those official feeds into one fast, searchable view. Because so much of Alaska is roadless, coverage concentrates on the highways that actually link communities: the Seward Highway down Turnagain Arm to the Kenai Peninsula, the Glenn Highway out of Anchorage toward Glennallen and Tok, the Parks Highway (AK-3) north past Denali to Fairbanks, the Richardson Highway over Thompson Pass between Valdez and Fairbanks, the Sterling Highway across the Kenai, and the Steese Highway above Fairbanks. If a road has cameras, you can scan it here before you commit.

What makes Alaska driving unusual is the spread of conditions across a single route. A sea-level stretch along Cook Inlet can be bare and wet while a pass 30 miles away is whiteout and ice, and the difference between Anchorage and Thompson Pass or Eagle Summit can be the difference between an easy drive and a closure. The cameras and the nearby road-weather stations (readings shown in degrees Fahrenheit and miles per hour) let you see that gap directly: wind, temperature, and what the pavement actually looks like, not just a forecast for the nearest town.

This map helps anyone moving between Alaska's road-system hubs: commuters between Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley, anglers and travelers heading to Soldotna, Kenai, and Homer, road-trippers bound for Denali National Park and Preserve or Kenai Fjords National Park, truckers running the Glenn and Richardson to the Interior, and winter drivers watching for avalanche control along Turnagain Arm, deep snow on Thompson Pass, and the extreme cold and limited daylight that define a Fairbanks-area winter. Check the camera, check the road-weather, then drive.

Statewide

The full Alaska 511 network across the connected road system: the Seward, Sterling, Glenn, Parks (AK-3), Richardson, and Steese highways, plus the cameras and roughly 79 RWIS road-weather stations tying Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, the Kenai Peninsula, Fairbanks, and Valdez together. Start here when your trip crosses regions or you want to compare a sea-level stretch against a pass like Thompson Pass or Eagle Summit before committing to the drive.

Anchorage

Alaska's largest city and the hub where the Glenn Highway and the Seward Highway meet. Cameras cover the Glenn/AK-1 north toward the Mat-Su Valley, the Seward Highway south as it leaves town and runs onto Turnagain Arm toward Girdwood, and the surrounding Anchorage Bowl. This is the natural launch point for trips to the Kenai Peninsula, Denali, or the Interior, so check it first to see whether the corridors out of the city are clear.

Mat-Su Valley

The Matanuska-Susitna Valley around Wasilla and Palmer, where the Parks Highway (AK-3) splits north from the Glenn Highway (AK-1). Cameras watch the heavily traveled Anchorage commute, the Glenn climbing east past the Matanuska Glacier toward Glennallen, and the start of the Parks Highway run toward Talkeetna and Denali. Wind and blowing snow are common on the valley flats, so the road-weather readings here are worth a look in winter.

Kenai Peninsula

The Sterling Highway (AK-1) west from Tern Lake Junction through Cooper Landing, Soldotna, and Kenai, then south along Cook Inlet to Homer, plus the Seward Highway (AK-9) tail to Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park. Cameras cover this fishing and recreation corridor along the Kenai and Russian rivers and through the Chugach National Forest. Watch for fog off the inlet and snow on the Tern Lake and Cooper Landing stretches.

Parks Hwy & Denali

The George Parks Highway (AK-3), the 362-mile Anchorage-to-Fairbanks artery and the main road to Denali National Park and Preserve at Milepost 237. Cameras follow the climb over Broad Pass and the Alaska Range and the approach to the park entrance and the Talkeetna spur. Note the seasonal Pretty Rocks landslide closure inside the park: private vehicles reach only Mile 15 (Savage River), with buses running farther per the Park Service's current limit. Check the highway weather before the long Interior run.

Fairbanks

Interior Alaska's hub, where the Parks Highway, the Richardson Highway, and the Steese Highway converge near a city that sits around 450 feet but climbs fast on the routes leaving it. Cameras cover the Steese over Cleary Summit (about 2,233 ft) toward Eagle Summit (about 3,685 ft) and the corridors south and east. This is extreme-cold and short-daylight country in winter, so the °F road-weather readings and pavement views matter as much as any forecast.

Richardson & Valdez

The Richardson Highway (AK-4/AK-2), 366 miles from the port of Valdez on Prince William Sound up over Thompson Pass to Fairbanks. Cameras focus on Thompson Pass (about 2,678 ft), the snowiest weather station in Alaska, which averages roughly 500 inches a year and routinely sees closures and avalanche control above Valdez. Scan the pass and its road-weather stations before you drop toward the coast or climb into the Chugach Mountains.

Glenn Hwy & Tok

The Glenn Highway (AK-1), a National Scenic Byway running 189 miles from Anchorage past Palmer and the road-accessible Matanuska Glacier to Glennallen, then continuing as the Tok Cutoff toward Tok and the Alaska Highway. Cameras cover this Interior-bound corridor between the Chugach and Talkeetna mountains. Long gaps between services and exposed, windy stretches make the camera and road-weather views especially useful here in winter.

Tips for using Alaska road cameras

  • Compare a pass camera against a sea-level one before you go: Turnagain Arm, Thompson Pass, Eagle Summit, or Broad Pass can be storming while Anchorage or Fairbanks is dry.
  • Check the nearby RWIS road-weather station alongside the camera; readings come in degrees Fahrenheit and miles per hour, and wind plus pavement temperature often tell you more than the camera alone.
  • Save the cameras and stations you watch most, like your Seward Highway commute or the Thompson Pass summit, to your favorites so they load first every trip.
  • In winter, plan for limited daylight and extreme cold in the Interior, carry an emergency kit, and assume that a closed pass can add hours to a Richardson or Parks Highway drive.
  • Watch for avalanche control on the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm and for deep snow on Thompson Pass, where the Alaska DOT closes the road after big storms.
  • Cameras and road-weather are a planning aid, not a substitute for official status: confirm closures and travel advisories on Alaska 511 (511.alaska.gov) before you rely on them.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras and road-weather stations does Alaska have?
Our map pulls in roughly 144 Alaska 511 traffic cameras and about 79 RWIS road-weather stations. Because most of Alaska has no roads, coverage concentrates on the connected highway system around Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley, the Kenai Peninsula, Denali, Fairbanks, and Valdez.
Which highways are covered?
The major routes: the Seward Highway (AK-9/AK-1, Anchorage to Seward along Turnagain Arm), the Sterling Highway (AK-1, across the Kenai to Homer), the Glenn Highway (AK-1, Anchorage to Glennallen and Tok), the Parks Highway (AK-3, Anchorage to Denali and Fairbanks), the Richardson Highway (AK-4/AK-2, Valdez to Fairbanks over Thompson Pass), and the Steese Highway above Fairbanks.
How do I check the road to Denali National Park?
Use the Parks Hwy & Denali area. The George Parks Highway (AK-3) is the main approach, with the park entrance at Milepost 237, about 237 miles north of Anchorage and 120 miles south of Fairbanks. Scan the cameras over Broad Pass and the Alaska Range before the long Interior drive.
Can I drive into Denali National Park?
Only partway. Because of the Pretty Rocks landslide, private vehicles reach Mile 15 (Savage River), and buses run farther out along the Park Road, with the Park Service capping the 2026 season's bus destination short of the historic Eielson and Wonder Lake stops. Always confirm current Park Road status with the National Park Service before you go.
Why does Thompson Pass close so often?
Thompson Pass on the Richardson Highway, about 2,678 feet above Valdez, is the snowiest weather station in Alaska, averaging roughly 500 inches of snow a year. After big storms the Alaska DOT closes the pass for safety and avalanche control, so check the summit cameras and road-weather before driving between Valdez and the Interior.
Is the Seward Highway dangerous in winter?
The stretch along Turnagain Arm between Anchorage and Girdwood is avalanche-prone, gets ice and fast-changing weather, and is occasionally closed for avalanche control after heavy snow. Check the Turnagain Arm cameras and the nearby road-weather readings before heading down to the Kenai Peninsula or Seward.
What do the temperature and wind numbers mean?
RWIS road-weather stations report air and pavement conditions in degrees Fahrenheit and wind in miles per hour. In Alaska that context is critical: a pass can be far colder and windier than the town below it, and pavement temperature near freezing is a strong hint of ice even when the camera looks clear.
Do you cover road cameras in other states?
Yes. Beyond Alaska we map official feeds for California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, and Alberta, so you can check passes and corridors across the West and into Canada from the same place.
