About this map

North Dakota is a state of long, open corridors and very few of them, which makes every drive a commitment. Interstate 94 runs the full width of the southern tier for roughly 350 miles, linking Fargo, Jamestown, Bismarck-Mandan, Dickinson, and Medora before crossing into Montana near Beach. Interstate 29 carries the north-south traffic up the eastern edge from the South Dakota line near Hankinson through Fargo and Grand Forks to the Canadian border at Pembina. Across the northern tier, US-2 ties together Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Rugby, Minot, and Williston as a mostly four-lane route shadowing the old Great Northern Railway. When the weather is good, these are fast, easy roads. When it turns, there is often no shortcut and no shelter for many miles.

Our North Dakota camera map pulls roughly 186 live NDDOT road cameras from the state's public ArcGIS feed into one fast, searchable view. Tap an area preset to jump straight to the part of the state you are driving, whether that is the I-94 run between metros, the I-29 corridor, the Bakken oil patch around Williston and Watford City, or a specific city like Bismarck-Mandan or Minot. Because North Dakota's population is concentrated in a handful of cities separated by wide stretches of prairie, a single camera check on the corridor ahead can tell you far more than a regional forecast about what you are actually about to drive into.

North Dakota's signature hazard is winter, and it is severe. Ground blizzards lift loose snow off the open fields and drop visibility to zero on otherwise clear days, windchills can reach 40 below, and NDDOT does not hesitate to issue "no travel advised" warnings or physically close and gate I-94 and I-29 during blizzards. Looking at the road before you leave is the single most useful thing you can do here. Each camera on our map is paired with the nearest National Weather Service airport station for current air temperature, wind, and humidity, so you can read the conditions near the camera while you use the live image itself as your ground truth.

Statewide

The full North Dakota picture across every interstate and US route: I-94 from Fargo through Jamestown, Bismarck-Mandan, and Dickinson to the Montana line at Beach; I-29 from the South Dakota border up through Fargo and Grand Forks to Pembina and Canada; US-2 along the northern tier through Devils Lake, Rugby, Minot, and Williston; plus US-83 (Bismarck to Minot), US-85 through the Bakken, US-52, US-281, and ND-22. Use this view to scan the whole state during a statewide storm or to plan a cross-state trip end to end.

Fargo

North Dakota's largest metro, where I-94 and I-29 cross at the state's busiest interchange on the Red River border with Moorhead, Minnesota. Cameras cover the I-29/I-94 junction, the parclo interchange at Exit 65 where I-29/US-81 meets Main Avenue (Business Loop I-94/US-10), the US-10/Main Avenue corridor west through West Fargo, and the Red River crossing into Moorhead. This is the eastern anchor of I-94 and the most heavily traveled corner of the state.

Bismarck–Mandan

The state capital and its twin city across the Missouri River, joined by I-94 over the aging Grant Marsh Bridge. Cameras watch the I-94 corridor through the metro, the US-83 interchange (US-83 runs north toward Minot), the I-194 and Memorial Highway business loop on the Mandan side, and the river crossing itself, which is a frequent construction and bottleneck point. This is the midpoint of any cross-state I-94 drive and the junction where US-83 traffic from central North Dakota meets the interstate.

Grand Forks

The Red River Valley city where I-29 meets US-2, the gateway between the interstate and the northern-tier route toward Devils Lake, Rugby, Minot, and Williston. Cameras cover the I-29 mainline through town (just four exits at a 70 mph limit), the US-2 interchange that leads to Grand Forks International Airport and east toward East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and the open approaches north and south. This stretch of I-29 is one of the first to close in a Red River Valley blizzard.

Minot

The "Magic City" and the crossroads of the northern tier, where three US highways converge: US-2 running east-west toward Williston and Grand Forks, US-83 (Broadway) running north-south toward Bismarck and Minot Air Force Base, and US-52 angling northwest toward the Portal border crossing into Saskatchewan. Cameras cover these junctions and the approaches into the Souris (Mouse) River valley. Minot is the natural midpoint and fuel stop on any US-2 drive across the top of the state.

Williston & the Bakken

The heart of the Bakken oil patch in the state's remote northwest, where US-85 (the Theodore Roosevelt Expressway) and US-2 carry extremely heavy truck traffic between Williston and Watford City. Cameras cover the US-85 corridor, the Williston truck reliever route and 18th Street bypass built to route oil-field trucks around the city, and the approaches toward Watford City and New Town. Expect heavy semis, oil-field equipment, and long exposed gaps between services. US-85 south also leads to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

I-94 Corridor

The cross-state east-west spine, roughly 350 miles from the Red River at Fargo through Valley City, Jamestown (where US-52 joins), Bismarck-Mandan, Dickinson, and Medora to the Montana line at Beach. Cameras line the long rural stretches between metros, including the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park near Medora and the US-85 junction at Belfield (Exit 42) that leads to the park's North Unit. These open segments between cities are exactly where ground blizzards strike and where NDDOT installs its closure gates.

I-29 Corridor

The north-south route up the eastern edge of the state, from the South Dakota border near Hankinson through Fargo and Grand Forks to the Canadian border at Pembina, where it connects to Manitoba Highway 75 toward Winnipeg at the busiest border crossing in North Dakota. Cameras cover the open Red River Valley stretches between cities, the Drayton and Pembina exits, and the approaches into Fargo and Grand Forks. This flat, wind-exposed corridor closes border-to-border during major blizzards.

Tips for using North Dakota road cameras

  • Check the corridor preset for the road you are actually driving (I-94, I-29, or US-2) before you leave, because conditions on North Dakota's open prairie can differ wildly from one stretch to the next.
  • Treat an NDDOT "no travel advised" warning as a hard stop, and never drive around a closed-road gate on I-94 or I-29: it is illegal, carries a fine, and the conditions behind it are genuinely life-threatening.
  • Watch for ground blizzards even on clear, sunny days, since wind alone can lift loose snow off the fields and drop visibility to zero in seconds with no snow falling.
  • Carry a real winter survival kit (blankets, food, water, a charged phone, and warm layers) because a stranded car in a North Dakota blizzard with 40-below windchills is an emergency, not an inconvenience.
  • On US-85 through the Bakken between Williston and Watford City, expect very heavy truck traffic and oil-field equipment, and give yourself extra following distance and passing room.
  • Use the nearby-airport weather reading as a rough gauge of cold and wind only, and rely on the live camera image itself to judge visibility, blowing snow, and whether the road is actually drivable.

North Dakota road camera guides

In-depth guides to the highways, passes and destinations we cover here.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras are on the North Dakota map and where do they come from?
The map shows roughly 186 live NDDOT road cameras pulled from the North Dakota Department of Transportation's public ArcGIS feed. They are concentrated along the interstates (I-94 and I-29), the major US routes (US-2, US-83, US-85, US-52), and the metro areas of Fargo, Bismarck-Mandan, Grand Forks, Minot, and Williston.
Does the map show road temperature or whether the pavement is icy?
No. NDDOT does not publish a usable road-weather sensor feed, so each camera is paired with the nearest National Weather Service airport station, which reports current air temperature, wind, and humidity. That station can be 15 to 25 or more miles away at a different elevation, so it tells you the weather near the camera, not the pavement temperature or whether the road is icy. Use the live camera image as your ground truth.
Why does North Dakota close entire interstates in winter?
During blizzards, blowing and drifting snow can drop visibility to zero across long open stretches, making travel life-threatening and stranding vehicles. NDDOT and the Highway Patrol respond by issuing "no travel advised" warnings and physically closing and gating long segments of I-94 and I-29, sometimes border-to-border. Driving on a closed road is prohibited and can carry a fine, and there is rarely a safe detour because the parallel routes are just as exposed.
What is a ground blizzard and why is it so dangerous here?
A ground blizzard happens when strong wind lifts loose snow already on the ground and blows it across the road, dropping visibility to near zero even when the sky is clear and no snow is falling. North Dakota's flat, open prairie offers nothing to block the wind, so drivers can punch into a whiteout wall with no warning, which is how multi-vehicle pileups and stranded vehicles happen out here.
What should I know about driving US-85 through the Bakken?
US-85 between Williston and Watford City is the spine of the Bakken oil patch and carries some of the heaviest truck traffic in the state, with daily volumes that grew dramatically during the oil boom. Expect constant semis and oil-field equipment, remote stretches with few services, and truck-reliever bypasses around Williston and Watford City. The Williston & the Bakken preset focuses your view on this corridor.
How do I get to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, and are there cameras nearby?
The park's South Unit is along I-94 at Medora (around exits 24 to 27), and the North Unit is reached by taking US-85 north from Belfield at I-94 Exit 42 for about 50 miles. Cameras on the I-94 Corridor and Williston & the Bakken presets cover these approaches, which is useful in winter when the western part of the state can be exposed and remote.
Can I save the cameras I check most often?
Yes. Use the favorites feature to save the cameras along your regular route, whether that is your I-94 commute through Bismarck-Mandan, the I-29 run between Fargo and Grand Forks, or your stretch of US-2 or US-85, so they are one tap away next time you need a quick look before heading out.
Do you cover road cameras in nearby states too?
Yes. If your trip crosses state lines, we have the same fast camera maps for neighboring and regional states, including Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, and Colorado. Check our Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, and Colorado camera maps, or see the full list on our all-states road cameras hub to plan a multi-state drive end to end.
