About this map

Illinois is built around Chicago, and Chicago is built around its expressways. The Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Eisenhower, and the Stevenson carry some of the heaviest traffic in the country, and a single stalled truck can back up a corridor for miles. Our Illinois IDOT camera map pulls together roughly 3,673 live road cameras from the Illinois Department of Transportation's TravelMidwest platform into one fast, searchable view, so you can see what's actually happening on the road before you commit to it.

The coverage runs far beyond the city. The map reaches the collar-county tollways through Naperville, Schaumburg, Joliet, Aurora, and Elgin; the I-39, I-74, I-55, and I-57 corridors that connect Rockford, the Quad Cities, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Champaign-Urbana, and the state capital at Springfield; and the Metro East interstates across the river from St. Louis. Whether you are commuting downtown, running freight on I-80, or driving the length of the state, there is a camera near your route.

Each camera is paired with a current reading from the nearest National Weather Service airport station, which gives you air temperature, wind, and humidity near the camera. Treat that as a regional reference, not a road-surface report. The airport can sit 15 to 25 or more miles away at a different elevation, so the number tells you the weather near the camera, not the pavement temperature or whether the road is icy. The live image is always your best evidence.

Statewide

The full picture across Illinois, from the Wisconsin line to Cairo and from the Mississippi to the Indiana border. This view covers every interstate IDOT monitors, including the Chicago expressways, the four tollways, the I-80 freight route to Iowa, the I-55 diagonal from Chicago to St. Louis, and the I-57, I-70, and I-64 downstate corridors. Use it to scan a long cross-state trip before zooming into a metro.

Chicago

The dense core of the network: the Kennedy (I-90/I-94) from O'Hare to the downtown split, the Dan Ryan (I-90/I-94) heading south, the Eisenhower (I-290) running west, the Stevenson (I-55) toward the southwest suburbs, the Bishop Ford (I-94), I-57, and Lake Shore Drive along the lakefront. The Jane Byrne Interchange, where the Kennedy, Dan Ryan, and Eisenhower meet near downtown, is one of the busiest and most camera-covered spots in the country.

Suburbs & Tollways

The collar-county ring served by the Illinois Tollway and IDOT: the Jane Addams (I-90) out toward Elgin and Rockford, the Reagan (I-88) through Aurora, Naperville, and DeKalb, the Tri-State (I-294) on the western bypass, and the Veterans Memorial (I-355) running north-south through Bolingbrook. I-55, I-80, and I-88 tie in Joliet, Schaumburg, and the western suburbs, where construction and commuter volume both run high.

Rockford

Northern Illinois around the Rock River. The Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) clips the northeast side on its run between Chicago and South Beloit at the Wisconsin line, while I-39 drops south toward Bloomington and US-20 and the Illinois 2 corridor carry local and regional traffic. This stretch of I-90 sees lake-influenced and open-country snow that can move in well ahead of the city.

Quad Cities

The Illinois side of the Mississippi River crossing at Moline and Rock Island, across from Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa. The new I-74 bridge is the marquee crossing; I-80 carries cross-state freight over the river to the north, I-280 swings south as a bypass, and I-88 (the Reagan) begins its eastward run toward Chicago. Bridges and river-valley fog are the things to watch here.

Peoria

Central Illinois on the Illinois River. I-74 is the main artery, crossing the river through Peoria and East Peoria on its way between the Quad Cities and Bloomington, while I-474 forms a southern bypass and US-150 and Illinois 6 handle local connections. River fog, bridge icing, and downstate snow squalls are the recurring hazards on this corridor.

Central Illinois

The heart of downstate: Springfield, the capital, on I-55 and I-72; Bloomington-Normal at the I-55/I-39/I-74 crossroads; and Champaign-Urbana where I-72, I-74, and I-57 converge. I-55 runs the diagonal between Chicago and St. Louis, I-57 heads south toward Effingham and Marion, and I-70 joins I-57 through Effingham. Open prairie here means blowing snow and sudden whiteouts in winter.

Metro East (St. Louis)

The Illinois suburbs of Greater St. Louis, including East St. Louis, Collinsville, and Edwardsville. I-55, I-64, and I-70 funnel toward the downtown St. Louis bridges, while I-270 crosses the Mississippi to the north and I-255 forms the eastern beltway over the Jefferson Barracks Bridge. Bridge work, river fog, and St. Louis-bound commuter traffic make this a stretch worth checking before you drive.

Tips for using Illinois road cameras

  • Before any Chicago commute, scan the Kennedy (I-90/I-94), Dan Ryan, and Eisenhower (I-290) cameras around the Jane Byrne Interchange first, since a slowdown there ripples across all three expressways.
  • In winter, check Lake Shore Drive and the lakefront cameras early in a storm, because lake-effect snow and high winds shut the Drive down fast, as the 2011 Groundhog Day blizzard infamously proved.
  • For a cross-state freight run, watch the I-80 and I-55 cameras for stacked trucks and incident backups before you reach the congestion, not after.
  • Driving downstate through open prairie on I-39, I-55, or I-57, look for blowing snow and whiteout conditions on the rural cameras even when the sky looks clear.
  • Check the Quad Cities I-74 and I-80 bridge cameras and the Metro East river crossings for fog and ice, since bridges freeze and fog up before the surrounding road does.
  • Treat the nearby airport weather reading as a regional reference for air temperature and wind only, and always trust the live camera image over the number for what the road actually looks like.

Frequently asked questions

How many cameras are on the Illinois IDOT map?
Roughly 3,673 live traffic cameras, sourced from the Illinois Department of Transportation through the public TravelMidwest platform. Coverage is densest on the Chicago expressways and tollways and extends to the major downstate interstates and metros.
Which Chicago expressways are covered?
All the named expressways: the Kennedy (I-90/I-94), the Dan Ryan (I-90/I-94 south), the Eisenhower (I-290), the Stevenson (I-55), the Bishop Ford (I-94), I-57, and Lake Shore Drive, plus the tollways, the Jane Addams (I-90), the Reagan (I-88), the Tri-State (I-294), and the Veterans Memorial (I-355).
Do the cameras show whether the road is icy?
No. The cameras are still images, and the weather shown beside each one comes from the nearest National Weather Service airport station, not a road sensor. That gives you air temperature, wind, and humidity near the camera, sometimes from an airport 15 to 25 or more miles away, but it does not measure pavement temperature or tell you the road is frozen. Use the live image to judge conditions yourself.
Is there pavement temperature or RWIS sensor data?
No. This feed does not include road-weather sensor or pavement-temperature data. The only weather shown is the nearest airport's current air conditions, which is a regional reference, not an on-road measurement.
How often do the images update?
The cameras refresh as IDOT publishes new still frames through the TravelMidwest system. Refresh the view to pull the latest image, and remember that a still capture shows a single moment, not live motion.
Can I check Chicago traffic congestion with these cameras?
Yes. The Chicago and Suburbs & Tollways presets put you on the most congested corridors in the country, including the Eisenhower, the Kennedy, and the Jane Byrne Interchange, so you can see backups before you leave instead of sitting in them.
Does the map work outside Chicago?
Yes. Beyond the metro, presets cover Rockford, the Quad Cities at Moline and Rock Island, Peoria, Central Illinois around Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, and Champaign-Urbana, and the Metro East region across from St. Louis.
What if my trip crosses into another state?
We cover neighboring states too. Heading west toward Iowa on I-80 or I-88, check the Iowa DOT cameras; driving north toward Minnesota, see the Minnesota DOT cameras; running southwest into Missouri and beyond toward Kansas, see the Kansas KDOT cameras; and for the Rockies, the Colorado CDOT cameras. You can browse every state we cover from the main road cameras hub.
