About this map
Wisconsin's traffic cameras come from WisDOT's 511WI system, a free statewide network of more than 500 cameras that covers the interstates, the big-city freeways, and the rural corridors that knit the state together. You'll find dense coverage where it matters most in winter: the I-94 spine from Milwaukee through Madison, the Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, and Eau Claire on to the Minnesota line; the I-39/90 run down to the Illinois border; the I-41/US-41 corridor up through the Fox Valley to Green Bay; and the freeway tangle inside Milwaukee, including the Marquette Interchange downtown and the rebuilt Zoo Interchange on the west side.
These cameras are built for traffic, not weather. The 511WI feeds don't carry on-road sensor data like pavement temperature or surface condition, so on this site each camera is paired with the nearest National Weather Service airport station to give you a read on what the sky is doing nearby. Treat that as the nearest airport's conditions alongside each camera, not a measurement of the road surface in the frame. A camera near La Crosse or Wausau shows you the live picture of the lanes; the airport line next to it tells you the temperature, wind, and visibility being reported a short distance away.
The honest way to use this page is to let the camera be the truth and the weather be the context. If the airport is reporting snow and the camera shows white, snow-packed lanes and trucks crawling, believe the lanes. Wisconsin winters bring lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, whiteout pileups on the I-90/94 corridor, glare ice, dense river-valley fog, and brutal cold, and spring brings Mississippi flooding near La Crosse. Scanning a string of cameras along your route before you leave is the fastest way to see a problem developing before you're stuck in it.

Statewide
The full WisDOT 511WI camera network in one view, spanning every interstate and major corridor from the Illinois line to Lake Superior. Use this when you're crossing the state or comparing conditions between regions, the lake-effect snow belt along Lake Michigan, the I-90/94 corridor, the Fox Valley, and the Northwoods can all be doing completely different things on the same day. Each camera is paired with the nearest airport's conditions for weather context.
Milwaukee
Wisconsin's busiest freeway grid: I-94 and I-43 meeting I-794 at the Marquette Interchange downtown, the rebuilt Zoo Interchange on the west side where I-94, I-894, I-41/US-41, and US-45 tangle together, plus the Hoan Bridge carrying I-794 over the harbor. Cameras here cover the East-West Freeway, the North-South corridor, and the airport approaches. This is lake-effect country, the western shore of Lake Michigan can pick up several heavy snow events a winter, so check the lanes before committing to a rush-hour run.
Madison
The state capital's chokepoint is the Beltline, US-12/18 looping around the south side and carrying well over 120,000 vehicles a day, feeding into I-39/90/94 on the east side and US-151 toward Sun Prairie and the northeast. Cameras watch the Beltline interchanges, the Interstate around the isthmus, and the approaches from the Dells and Janesville. The Beltline is the de facto interstate through Madison, and when it ices over the whole region backs up fast.
Fox Valley & Green Bay
The I-41/US-41 corridor strings together Fond du Lac, Oshkosh, Neenah, and the Fox Cities around Appleton before reaching Green Bay and Lambeau Field, where I-41 meets I-43. Cameras line this north-south spine plus the WI-441 Tri-County beltway around Appleton. Game-day traffic, lake-effect bands sweeping in off Lake Michigan, and fog over the Fox River all show up here, so it's worth a look before heading up to a Packers Sunday or pushing on to Door County.
I-94 West (Eau Claire–Dells)
The cross-state I-94 spine where I-90 and I-94 run concurrently from Tomah southeast past the Wisconsin Dells, and I-94 splits off west through Black River Falls, Eau Claire, and Menomonie toward the Minnesota line near the Twin Cities. This is the most pileup-prone winter stretch in the state, multi-vehicle crashes near Tomah, Warrens, and Jackson County are a near-annual event when whiteouts hit. Cameras here are essential; check several along your route before you commit.
La Crosse
Wisconsin's largest city on the Mississippi, where I-90 crosses the river into Minnesota at La Crescent and US-53 heads north toward Eau Claire and the Northwoods. Cameras cover the Interstate bridge, the downtown river crossings, and the bluff approaches. Dense fog forms in the river valley, lake-effect and clipper snows blow through in winter, and spring snowmelt can push the Mississippi to major flood stage, swamping WI-35 and low-lying river roads upstream.
Northwoods
Central and northern Wisconsin along the I-39/US-51 corridor through Stevens Point, Mosinee, and Wausau, continuing north on US-51 toward Merrill and Hurley, plus US-2 along the Lake Superior rim and US-53 up to Superior. Coverage thins as you go north, so cameras here are precious. This is cold-snap and heavy-snow territory, Lake Superior lake-effect bands hammer the far north, and a winter run toward Bayfield or the Apostle Islands deserves a careful camera check first.
Southeast
The Chicago corridor: I-94 running south from Milwaukee through Racine and Kenosha to the Illinois state line, plus the I-43 and US-12 approaches toward Lake Geneva and the Walworth County lake country. Cameras here watch heavy commuter and Chicago-bound interstate traffic that snarls quickly in lake-effect snow. It's also the gateway for southern Wisconsin's resort towns, so weekend volume stacks on top of weather when conditions turn.
Tips for using Wisconsin road cameras
- Believe the lanes, not the label. The airport conditions shown next to each camera come from the nearest NWS station and describe the sky nearby, not the pavement in the picture. If the camera shows snow-covered, glossy, or rutted lanes while the airport reads light snow, trust what you can see in the frame.
- Scan a string of cameras, not just one. The I-90/94 corridor between Tomah and Eau Claire can be clear at one camera and a whiteout a few miles on. Click through several cameras along your whole route before deciding it's safe to go.
- Respect the Milwaukee and Madison interchanges in bad weather. The Marquette and Zoo Interchanges in Milwaukee and the Madison Beltline are high-volume merge points where a single spinout backs up miles of traffic fast, check them before rush hour during snow or ice.
- Watch for lake-effect bands. Cameras along the Lake Michigan shore (Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, the Fox Valley) and the Lake Superior rim up north can show heavy, localized snow that the nearest airport may barely register. A clear forecast does not rule out a sudden whiteout near the lakes.
- Mind the river valleys for fog. Cameras near La Crosse and along the Mississippi, plus the Fox and Wisconsin river crossings, frequently show dense valley fog at dawn even when uplands are clear. Look for it before a pre-sunrise drive.
- In spring, check the La Crosse and Mississippi-corridor cameras for high water. Rapid snowmelt can push the river to major flood stage and close WI-35 and low-lying roads, the cameras and 511WI event list will show closures before you reach a barricaded ramp.
