Houston TranStar is the joint traffic and emergency-management center that watches over the Houston region's freeways, and it is one of the most ambitious partnerships of its kind in the country. Four agencies share the same building near Memorial Park and the same camera network: the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Harris County, the City of Houston and METRO, the regional transit authority. Together they operate a vast field of traffic cameras across the metro area, and the live still images are what we pull onto this page so you can see the road before you commit to it. This page covers the Houston freeway system specifically, not the whole state of Texas.

The Houston network is organized around a simple geography: radial freeways that fan out from downtown, and ring roads that wrap the metro at increasing distances. The radials are Interstate 10 (the Katy Freeway heading west and the East Freeway heading east), Interstate 45 (the North Freeway toward Dallas and the Gulf Freeway down to Galveston), US-59/I-69 (the Southwest Freeway toward Sugar Land and the Eastex Freeway toward Humble and Kingwood), US-290 (the Northwest Freeway toward Cypress and Tomball) and SH-288 (the South Freeway). The rings are Loop 610 (the Inner Loop tight around the urban core), Beltway 8 (the Sam Houston Tollway) and SH-99 (the Grand Parkway, the outermost loop), with the Hardy and Westpark tollways adding extra spokes.

One important note about how this page reads the weather. These Houston cameras are traffic cameras, not road-weather stations, so they carry no pavement or air sensors of their own. Instead, we show the nearest airport's conditions alongside each camera, drawn from National Weather Service observations at fields like George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) on the north side and William P. Hobby (HOU) on the south side. That gives you a reliable read on temperature, wind, rain and Gulf fog near the camera, but it is a regional reading rather than a measurement of the specific stretch of pavement.
