North Carolina's NCDOT camera network is one of the largest in the Southeast, with roughly 1,151 traffic cameras streaming live views from the Outer Banks to the Great Smoky Mountains. Coverage is densest along the interstate spine that knits the state together: I-40 running the full width from Wilmington through Raleigh, Greensboro and Asheville to the Tennessee line; I-85 and I-77 crossing at Charlotte; I-26 climbing into the mountains; and I-95, the eastern evacuation corridor that carries coastal traffic north and south. Cameras also blanket key US routes such as US-74, US-64, US-70 and US-17, plus the bridges and bypasses around every major metro.

These cameras matter most when conditions turn. In the west, I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge is famously rockslide-prone and was closed for months after Tropical Storm Helene undermined the roadbed in 2024; winter ice and snow regularly hit Asheville, Boone and the high passes. In the east, hurricanes drive coastal and I-95 evacuations, with inland flooding repeatedly swamping the interstate near Lumberton and Fayetteville. On the barrier islands, NC-12 along Cape Hatteras floods with ocean overwash during nor'easters and tropical systems. This site organizes those NCDOT feeds onto a single map with area presets for Charlotte, the Triangle, the Triad, the mountains, the coast, the Outer Banks and the I-95 corridor, so you can jump straight to the stretch you care about. NCDOT doesn't run its own roadside weather sensors, so alongside each camera we show current conditions from the nearest National Weather Service station — air temperature, wind and humidity. These are regional airport readings, often several miles away and at a different elevation, not on-road sensors: they tell you the weather near the camera, not whether the pavement itself is freezing.
