About this map
British Columbia is the most mountainous province in Canada to drive, and that is exactly what makes its camera network so useful. The official provincial system, DriveBC, runs hundreds of highway webcams strung across the Coast Mountains, the Cascades, the Selkirks and the Rockies, plus the Lower Mainland's bridges and the routes up and down Vancouver Island. Whether you are heading from Vancouver up the Sea-to-Sky to Whistler, tackling the Coquihalla between Hope and Kamloops, or running Highway 1 over Rogers Pass toward the Alberta border, a quick look at the road before you leave can be the difference between a smooth trip and a surprise chain-up or closure.
What sets BC apart from many other regions is that a large share of its mountain-pass cameras come with native road-weather (RWIS) data right beside the image. At many sites you can see not just the picture but the air temperature, the pavement (road-surface) temperature, the surface condition and the wind. On the high passes that pavement-temperature reading is gold: a road can sit at or below freezing while the air feels mild, and seeing the surface temperature tells you whether that wet-looking lane is actually black ice. For winter pass driving, that is the single most valuable number on the screen.

Province-wide
Every DriveBC corridor in one view, from the Lower Mainland bridges to the high passes and the far north. Use this when you are crossing multiple regions in a single trip — say Vancouver to the Okanagan, or Kamloops to the Alberta line — and want to scan the whole route at once. Most mountain sites include native road-weather, so you can read air and pavement temperature, surface condition and wind alongside the live image.
Vancouver & Lower Mainland
Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and the major crossings: Highway 1 (the Trans-Canada) through Burnaby and Surrey, Highway 99, and the big bridges including the Port Mann and the Lions Gate. This is the busiest, most congestion-prone stretch in the province, and the cameras are most useful for gauging commute backups, accident delays and the heavy coastal rain that can flood lanes and slow everything down.
Sea-to-Sky & Whistler
Highway 99 north from West Vancouver through Squamish to Whistler — the Sea-to-Sky. It is a spectacular but weather-volatile mountain road where a sunny departure in the city can turn to slush, ice or heavy snow within an hour as you climb. Cameras up the corridor, many with road-weather, let skiers and day-trippers check the snow line and surface conditions before committing to the drive up.
Coquihalla & the Canyon
BC's iconic Interior crossings: the Coquihalla (Highway 5) climbing over the Coquihalla Pass between Hope, Merritt and Kamloops, and the Fraser Canyon (Highway 1) through Hope, Boston Bar and Lytton. The Coquihalla is the most demanding mountain pass in the province — chain-ups, avalanche-control closures and brutal winds are routine in winter — while the Canyon adds rockfall and tunnels. Pavement-temperature readings here are essential cold-season planning.
Vancouver Island
The Island's main routes: Highway 1 over the Malahat between Victoria and Nanaimo, Highway 19 (the Inland Island Highway) running north toward Campbell River and Port Hardy, and Highway 4 west across the mountains to Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino. The Malahat is a steep, winding summit that backs up after any incident, and Highway 4 to the coast sees snow, fog and washout-grade rain — both are worth a camera check before you set out.
Okanagan
Highway 97 through BC's wine country and lake towns — Vernon, Kelowna, Penticton and on south toward the border — plus the connector routes that feed it. This is the busiest Interior corridor outside the Lower Mainland, with frequent congestion near the William R. Bennett Bridge at Kelowna. Cameras help with summer holiday traffic, winter lake-effect snow and the occasional rockslide or detour on the lakeshore highway.
Kootenays & the Rockies
The eastern crossings toward Alberta: Highway 1 over Rogers Pass through Glacier National Park between Revelstoke and Golden, and Highway 3 (the Crowsnest) over Kootenay Pass — the highest paved pass on a BC highway. Rogers Pass is one of the most active avalanche-control corridors in the world and closes regularly for control work, so the cameras and road-weather here are critical for anyone driving Highway 1 toward Banff and the Alberta line.
Northern BC
The long-haul northern routes centered on Prince George, where Highway 16 (the Yellowhead) and Highway 97 meet. These are remote, high-latitude highways with few services, long gaps between towns and serious winter cold, so a camera and a road-weather reading before a leg can confirm whether the road is bare, snow-packed or fogged in. Essential planning for anyone driving the north in the cold months.
Tips for using British Columbia road cameras
- On the mountain passes, read the pavement (road-surface) temperature, not just the air temperature. The road can sit below freezing while the air feels mild, which is exactly how black ice forms on a lane that only looks wet.
- Check both ends of a pass and a camera in the middle. The Coquihalla or Rogers Pass can be clear at Hope or Revelstoke and storming at the summit — one image rarely tells the whole story of a long climb.
- Carry and use proper winter tires on the high passes. Winter tires or chains are mandatory on the Coquihalla (Highway 5) from October 1 to April 30, and similar designated-route rules apply across BC's mountain highways.
- Plan around avalanche-control closures on Rogers Pass and the Coquihalla. These are planned, not random — when a control closure is posted, expect a multi-hour wait or a long detour, and check the cameras and DriveBC events before you leave.
- Watch for wind on exposed summits. Many BC road-weather sites report wind speed; high crosswinds on the Coquihalla and Kootenay Pass cause blowing-snow whiteouts even when it is not actively snowing.
- In the coastal lowlands and on Highway 4 to Tofino, the hazard is rain, not snow. Atmospheric-river storms can flood lanes and trigger washouts, so use the cameras to judge standing water and visibility before a coastal drive.
