About this map

This map brings together hundreds of live TDOT traffic cameras from the Tennessee Department of Transportation's SmartWay system into one fast, searchable view. Tennessee runs long and narrow from the Mississippi River to the Smoky Mountains, and TDOT concentrates its roughly 667 cameras in the four big metros and the mountain corridors in between. Whether you're checking the downtown loop in Nashville, the river bridges in Memphis, or the truck-heavy grade over Monteagle Mountain, you can see current road conditions at a glance instead of guessing.

Coverage follows the state's busiest corridors. In Middle Tennessee, I-40, I-24, and I-65 all converge in downtown Nashville, ringed by the I-440 connector, the I-840 southern loop, and Briley Parkway. In the west, Memphis is laced by I-40, I-55, and the I-240 loop with the wider I-269 outerbelt, anchored at the Hernando de Soto Bridge (I-40) over the Mississippi into Arkansas. East Tennessee adds Knoxville's I-40/I-75 split with the I-640 loop, I-140 and Pellissippi Parkway, and Chattanooga's tangle of I-24, I-75, and I-59 at the famous Ridge Cut through Missionary Ridge. Up in the northeast, the Tri-Cities of Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol sit on I-81 and I-26.

One important note on weather: these SmartWay cameras do not carry road-weather sensors on the public feed, so this map supplements each camera with the nearest airport's conditions from the National Weather Service, shown alongside the image rather than read off an on-road sensor. That airport reading is a useful gut check for temperature, wind, and visibility, but always confirm pavement conditions with your own eyes on the camera and with TDOT before you drive. Use the area presets to jump to your region, search by interstate or city, and save your most-checked cameras as favorites.

Statewide

A bird's-eye view of every TDOT SmartWay camera across Tennessee, spanning the full east-to-west reach of I-40 from Memphis to the North Carolina line, plus I-24, I-65, I-75, I-81, and I-26. Best for an at-a-glance read before a long cross-state drive.

Nashville

Dense coverage of Middle Tennessee's hub where I-40, I-24, and I-65 converge downtown, ringed by the I-440 connector, the I-840 southern loop, and Briley Parkway. Ideal for timing the chronic rush-hour congestion through the inner-loop interchanges.

Memphis

Cameras across the I-40, I-55, and I-240 loop with the wider I-269 outerbelt, centered on the Hernando de Soto Bridge (I-40) over the Mississippi River into West Memphis, Arkansas. Key for watching the busy I-40/I-55 freight crossings and river-bridge backups.

Knoxville

I-40 and I-75 cameras through East Tennessee's third metro, including the I-640 bypass loop, I-140, and Pellissippi Parkway out toward Oak Ridge and Maryville. Good for the I-40/I-75 overlap where through traffic and local commuters share the same lanes.

Chattanooga

Coverage of I-24, I-75, and I-59 around the Scenic City, including the steep Ridge Cut where I-24 slices through Missionary Ridge. Useful for the high-volume crossings near the Georgia line and the long-running concrete work at the Ridge Cut.

Tri-Cities & the Northeast

Cameras on I-81 and I-26 around Johnson City, Kingsport, and Bristol in Tennessee's far northeast corner. A higher, cooler region where winter snow and ice arrive earlier than the lowlands, on a corridor near the Virginia and North Carolina lines.

The Plateau & the Smokies

The mountain corridors between the metros: I-24 over truck-heavy Monteagle Mountain with its runaway ramps, I-40 climbing the Cumberland Plateau past Cookeville and Crab Orchard, and the rockslide- and fog-prone I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge east toward North Carolina. The state's most weather-sensitive miles.

Tips for using Tennessee road cameras

  • Before climbing or descending I-24 over Monteagle Mountain, check the cameras on both grades. The eastbound descent drops more than 1,100 feet at roughly a 6% grade with runaway-truck ramps, and brake-related slowdowns can stack up fast.
  • On I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge east of Knoxville, scan the cameras for fog and signs of rockslide-related closures. This stretch through the Smokies is notorious for thick fog and has shut down for months after slides and floods.
  • For Nashville trips, watch the inner-loop cameras where I-40, I-24, and I-65 converge downtown before you commit to a route. The I-440 connector or I-840 southern loop can be a better bet during peak congestion.
  • Crossing the Mississippi at Memphis, check the Hernando de Soto Bridge (I-40) and the I-55 bridge cameras. Both river crossings are major freight chokepoints and back up quickly when one is constrained.
  • Because these cameras have no on-road weather sensors, treat the nearest airport's reading as context only. A wet-looking road near freezing in the eastern mountains or the Cumberland Plateau usually means ice, even if the airport miles away reads above freezing.
  • Save your regular cameras as favorites, whether it's your Nashville commute, the Knoxville I-640 loop, or the Monteagle grade, so they load with one tap. For official closures and chain or restriction notices, always confirm with TDOT SmartWay or dial 511 in Tennessee.

Tennessee road camera guides

In-depth guides to the highways, passes and destinations we cover here.

Frequently asked questions

How often do the Tennessee TDOT cameras update?
The SmartWay cameras refresh on a regular interval, typically every minute or few minutes depending on the site, so you're seeing a near-real-time still image rather than a continuous video stream. For the most current view, reload the camera you're checking.
Which Tennessee roads and highways do the cameras cover?
Coverage spans Tennessee's major corridors, concentrated in the metros and mountain grades: I-40 from Memphis to the North Carolina line, I-24, I-65, I-75, I-81, and I-26, plus metro loops like the I-240 and I-269 in Memphis, the I-440 and I-840 in Nashville, the I-640 in Knoxville, and the Ridge Cut on I-24 in Chattanooga.
Can I check Nashville traffic with these cameras?
Yes. The Nashville area preset focuses on the downtown convergence of I-40, I-24, and I-65, plus the I-440 connector, the I-840 southern loop, and Briley Parkway, so you can scan for backups and incidents before heading out across Middle Tennessee.
Are the mountain grades like Monteagle and the Pigeon River Gorge covered?
Yes. The Plateau & the Smokies preset includes cameras on I-24 over Monteagle Mountain, a steep, truck-heavy grade with runaway ramps between Chattanooga and Nashville, and on I-40 through the rockslide- and fog-prone Pigeon River Gorge east of Knoxville toward North Carolina. These are the state's most weather-sensitive miles.
Does the map show weather alongside the cameras?
It shows the nearest airport's conditions alongside each camera, pulled from National Weather Service stations, since these SmartWay cameras carry no road-weather sensors on the public feed. That gives you temperature, wind, and visibility context, but it's an airport reading, not an on-road sensor, so confirm pavement conditions with the camera image and with official sources.
Can I save my most-used cameras?
Yes. The favorites feature lets you bookmark specific cameras, whether it's your Nashville commute, the Memphis river bridges, the Knoxville I-640 loop, or the Monteagle grade, so they're one tap away on your next visit.
Are these the official Tennessee DOT cameras?
The images come directly from the Tennessee Department of Transportation via its SmartWay traffic system. We organize them for easier browsing, but for official closures, restrictions, and alerts, always confirm with TDOT SmartWay or dial 511 in Tennessee.
Does this site cover states bordering Tennessee?
Yes. We also cover Tennessee's live neighbors, so you can plan a trip across state lines from one site: Georgia (GDOT) where I-75 and I-24 meet near Chattanooga, North Carolina (NCDOT) across the Smokies on I-40, and Kentucky (KYTC) to the north on I-65, I-75, and I-24.
