Virginia's VDOT 511 camera network is one of the largest on the East Coast, with roughly 1,700 traffic cameras streaming live views from the Washington, D.C. suburbs to the Blue Ridge to the Hampton Roads waterfront. Coverage is densest in Northern Virginia, where I-95, I-395 and the I-495 Capital Beltway feed into some of the worst congestion in the United States, but the feeds also blanket the I-95 East Coast spine from Fredericksburg through Richmond and Petersburg toward North Carolina, I-64 between Richmond, Charlottesville and the coast, the truck-heavy I-81 corridor down the Shenandoah Valley, and I-77 through the mountain tunnels of the southwest. If a major Virginia highway carries real traffic, you can probably scan it here before you commit to the drive.

These cameras matter most when the road backs up or the weather turns. Northern Virginia and the I-95 corridor see brutal, predictable congestion — the Springfield Interchange, the "Mixing Bowl" where I-95, I-395 and I-495 tangle together, alone carries roughly 430,000 vehicles a day. I-81 runs as a freight superhighway through the Valley, where trucks make up around a quarter of traffic and a single crash can stop the corridor for hours. In Hampton Roads, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel choke at rush hour and flood during coastal storms, and hurricanes can drive evacuations. This site organizes those VDOT feeds onto a single searchable map with area presets for Northern Virginia, Richmond, Hampton Roads, the Shenandoah Valley, Roanoke and the southwest, and the Charlottesville–central region, so you can jump straight to the stretch you care about. VDOT's traffic cameras don't carry their own road-weather sensors, so alongside each camera we show current conditions from the nearest National Weather Service airport station — air temperature, wind and humidity. Those are regional airport readings, often several miles away and at a different elevation, not on-road sensors: they tell you the weather near the camera, not whether the pavement itself is freezing.
