About this map

This map gathers the live road cameras from 511 Newfoundland and Labrador (511NL) — the province's official traveler-information system, run by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure — into one fast, searchable view. The cameras follow the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1), the roughly 900-kilometre spine that crosses the island from St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula through Clarenville, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor and Deer Lake to Corner Brook and the ferry terminal at Channel-Port aux Basques. Instead of guessing what the road looks like, you can see a recent still image before you commit to a winter drive.

One honest note up front: these are cameras only. There is no road-weather sensor feed here — no temperature, pavement or wind readout attached to each camera — and our weather supplement is U.S.-only, so it does not apply in Canada. For forecasts, watches and warnings, Environment Canada is the source. What the cameras give you is the most useful signal of all: the live picture. You can see snow on the lanes, slush and spray, blowing snow cutting visibility, fog, wet pavement, and traffic backing up behind an incident or a closure — the things a forecast can't show you in real time.

Use the area presets to jump straight to your part of the island — the Avalon around St. John's, the central run past Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor, or the western approach to Corner Brook and the ferry. Search for a town or route, save the cameras you check most as favorites, and open any feed for a larger image. It's a practical, traveler-first tool for commuters, truckers and anyone timing a run across Newfoundland's notoriously stormy Trans-Canada in winter.

Province-wide

A bird's-eye view of every 511NL camera across the island, tracing the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) from St. John's and the Avalon all the way west to Corner Brook and the Port aux Basques ferry. Best for an at-a-glance read before a long cross-island drive, when storms can close the highway in more than one spot at once.

St. John's & the Avalon

Cameras around the capital, St. John's, and across the Avalon Peninsula — including Mount Pearl, the Conception Bay communities, and the Trans-Canada (Route 1) heading west off the peninsula. This is the island's busiest corner and the home of the famous St. John's weather bombs: heavy snow, freezing rain and dense fog. Watch for slick pavement and backups before you head out.

Central (Gander & Grand Falls)

Cameras along the long central stretch of the Trans-Canada (Route 1) through Clarenville, Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor. This open, often exposed run sees heavy snow and frequent winter closures, and it's a long way between towns — scan the cameras to judge whether the highway is passable before you start across.

Western (Corner Brook)

Cameras on the western Trans-Canada (Route 1) around Deer Lake and Corner Brook and south toward the ferry at Channel-Port aux Basques. This region includes the infamous Wreckhouse near Port aux Basques, where winds funneling out of the Long Range Mountains can blow vehicles — even transport trucks — right off the road. Check here before any winter run to or from the ferry.

Tips for using Newfoundland and Labrador road cameras

  • Before crossing the Wreckhouse near Port aux Basques in winter, scan the western cameras for blowing snow and whiteouts — winds here regularly top 100 km/h and have rolled transport trucks. If a wind warning is posted, wait it out.
  • Treat each camera as the real signal: it shows snow, slush, spray, fog and backups directly. There's no temperature or sensor readout attached, so pair what you see with an Environment Canada forecast for the area.
  • On the long central run between Clarenville, Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor, check the cameras before you start — towns are far apart and the Trans-Canada closes in winter storms.
  • Around St. John's and the Avalon, watch for freezing rain and 'weather bomb' snowfall; a wet-looking road in a cold snap often means ice, so judge the picture, not just the calendar.
  • Save your regular cameras as favorites — your commute, the Wreckhouse, or a stretch of the Trans-Canada you cross often — so they load with one tap next time.
  • Cameras are a real-time gut check, but Newfoundland closes the Trans-Canada fast in storms — always confirm official closures, ferry status and wind warnings with 511NL (511nl.ca) or by dialing 511 in the province before you drive.

Newfoundland and Labrador road camera guides

In-depth guides to the highways, passes and destinations we cover here.

Frequently asked questions

How often do the 511NL cameras update?
The cameras refresh on a regular interval, so you're seeing a recent still image rather than continuous video. During heavy storms a feed may update more slowly or briefly go dark, so reload the camera you're checking for the most current view.
Which Newfoundland roads do these cameras cover?
Coverage follows the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) — the island's main spine — from St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula through Clarenville, Gander and Grand Falls-Windsor to Deer Lake, Corner Brook and the ferry terminal at Channel-Port aux Basques.
Do the cameras show road-weather or temperatures?
No. These are cameras only — there's no road-weather sensor feed and no temperature, wind or pavement readout attached to each camera. The live image is the signal: you can see snow, slush, blowing snow, fog and backups. For forecasts and warnings, Environment Canada is the source.
Can I check the Wreckhouse winds near Port aux Basques?
Yes. The Western (Corner Brook) preset covers the Trans-Canada toward Channel-Port aux Basques, including the Wreckhouse area, where winds off the Long Range Mountains can blow vehicles off the road. Use the camera to spot blowing snow and whiteouts, and confirm any posted wind warning with 511NL before driving through.
Why isn't there weather shown next to each camera like on the U.S. maps?
Our nearby-weather supplement is U.S.-only, so it doesn't apply in Newfoundland and Labrador. For Canadian conditions, check Environment Canada for the forecast, watches and warnings, and use the live camera image to read what the road is actually doing right now.
Can I save my most-used cameras?
Yes. Tap the favorite icon on any camera to save it on your device — your commute, the Wreckhouse, or a stretch of the Trans-Canada — so it's one tap away on your next visit.
Are these the official 511NL cameras?
The images come from 511 Newfoundland and Labrador (511nl.ca), the province's official traveler-information system run by the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. We organize them for easier browsing, but for official closures, ferry status and wind warnings, always confirm with 511NL or by dialing 511 in the province.
Does this site cover other provinces?
Yes. Alongside Newfoundland and Labrador, we cover neighboring Atlantic provinces including Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, plus many U.S. states, so you can plan a longer trip from one place. See every region on one map at /road-cameras.
