About this map
Alabama is a state you cross on Interstate 65. The I-65 spine runs the full length of the state, entering from the Tennessee line in the north, threading through Birmingham and the capital at Montgomery, and dropping all the way to the Gulf at Mobile. Branching off it are the corridors that tie the rest of the state together: I-20 and I-59 east and west through Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, I-85 from Montgomery out to Auburn and the Georgia line, I-22 northwest toward Memphis, and I-10 along the Gulf coast. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) watch this network with hundreds of live traffic cameras published through the ALGO Traffic system, and a quick look before you leave can spare you a long sit in a Birmingham backup or a fog-bound crawl over Mobile Bay.
The coverage is built around the state's metros. Birmingham has the densest cluster of cameras, concentrated on the interstates that knot together downtown, with Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley to the north, Montgomery at the center, Tuscaloosa to the west, Auburn-Opelika to the east, and Mobile and the Gulf coast at the southern tip. Between the cities, cameras follow the long through-routes so you can check the road well ahead of where you are. Pick the area preset closest to your drive and you will jump straight to the stretch you care about.
One thing to know up front: these are traffic cameras, not road-weather stations. They carry no pavement sensors and no roadside thermometers, so you are looking at the picture, not a sensor reading. To add context we show the nearest National Weather Service airport's current conditions alongside each camera. Treat that as the nearest airport's weather, often several miles away, rather than a measurement of the road surface under the lens. The image itself is the more honest signal for fog, standing water, a stalled backup, or in a rare ice event, white pavement. Statewide

Birmingham
Alabama's busiest interchange country and the heart of the camera network. Coverage centers on the tangle downtown where I-65 meets I-20/59 at the spot locals call Malfunction Junction, just northwest of the city core, where the rebuilt CBD bridges carry well over a hundred thousand vehicles a day. The preset also follows I-459, the southern bypass through Hoover and Bessemer, I-22 heading northwest toward Jasper and Memphis, and US-280 on the Red Mountain Expressway. Birmingham's everyday hazard is congestion, so these are the cameras to check for timing your run through town.
Huntsville
The Tennessee Valley and the north end of the state. Cameras cover I-565, the spur that connects I-65 near Decatur to US-72 and downtown Huntsville while passing Madison and the airport, along with the I-65 mainline and US-72 across the valley. This is rocket-and-research country in the Appalachian foothills, where commuter traffic and the occasional severe storm rolling in off the plateau are the things worth a glance before you head out.
Montgomery
The capital and the geographic crossroads of the state, where I-65 running north-south meets the southern terminus of I-85, which peels off to the east toward Auburn and Atlanta. The cameras here watch the junction and the approaches into the city. Montgomery sits squarely on the I-65 path between Birmingham and Mobile, so it is also a natural checkpoint for anyone driving the length of Alabama.
Mobile & the Gulf Coast
The Gulf coast and Alabama's most weather-sensitive corridor. Cameras follow I-10 through the George Wallace Tunnel beneath the Mobile River and out across Mobile Bay on the Jubilee Parkway, the 7.5-mile twin viaduct better known as the Bayway, toward Spanish Fort and Daphne. Dense bay fog has caused massive pileups here, including a roughly 200-vehicle crash in 1995, and the corridor is a primary hurricane-evacuation route off the coast. The cameras and ALDOT's low-visibility warning system are most valuable exactly when conditions turn, so check them before you commit to the bay crossing.
Tuscaloosa
West Alabama on the I-20/59 corridor, home to the University of Alabama and a city that knows severe weather firsthand after the April 2011 EF4 tornado. Cameras cover I-20/59 through and around town, the route that carries traffic between Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and on toward Meridian, Mississippi. Game-day surges and spring and fall storm threats are the reasons to look here before you drive.
Auburn & East Alabama
The I-85 corridor on the eastern side of the state, linking Montgomery with Auburn-Opelika and continuing to the Georgia line and Atlanta. Cameras watch the interstate through the Auburn-Opelika area, home to Auburn University, where football Saturdays bring heavy, concentrated traffic. It is the natural handoff point for drivers continuing east into Georgia.
Tips for using Alabama road cameras
- Pick the area preset closest to your drive first. Statewide, Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile & the Gulf Coast, Tuscaloosa or Auburn & East Alabama will drop you straight onto your stretch of road instead of hunting across the whole state.
- Read the picture, not a sensor. These cameras have no pavement or temperature gauges, so look at the image for fog, standing water or backups. The weather shown is the nearest airport's reading, often miles from the lens.
- Before crossing Mobile Bay, check the Bayway cameras for fog. Dense bay fog rolls in fast and has caused massive pileups; if the picture looks milky, slow down and heed the low-visibility warning signs.
- Time your Birmingham run by camera, not by habit. Malfunction Junction and the I-65/I-20/59 core back up daily, and a glance tells you whether to push through downtown or swing around on I-459.
- In a winter ice event, treat the cameras as a stay-or-go check. The South has little snow equipment, and as the 2014 storm showed, an inch or two of ice can strand drivers for hours. White pavement in the picture means stay put.
- Star the cameras you check most. Save your Birmingham commute, the Bayway or your I-65 checkpoint, and your regular view is one tap away the next morning.

Who runs Alabama's traffic cameras?
The cameras come from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and are published through ALGO Traffic, a system operated together with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). We pull those public feeds onto a single map and group them by region so you can find your road quickly.
Do the cameras show road temperature or pavement conditions?
No. ALDOT's cameras are traffic cameras with no roadside thermometers or pavement sensors. To add context we show the nearest National Weather Service airport's current conditions next to each camera, but that is an airport reading that may be several miles away, not a measurement of the road surface. The picture itself is your best read on fog, water or ice.
Which areas of Alabama have the most cameras?
Birmingham has the densest coverage, concentrated on the interstates around downtown including Malfunction Junction. The other metros, Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Auburn-Opelika, are well covered, and cameras also follow the long interstate corridors between cities, with I-65 as the main spine.
Can I watch the Mobile Bayway and the George Wallace Tunnel?
Yes. The Mobile & the Gulf Coast preset covers I-10 through the George Wallace Tunnel and out across Mobile Bay on the Jubilee Parkway, the twin bridges known as the Bayway. This is the corridor most prone to dense fog, so the cameras are especially worth checking before you cross.
What is Malfunction Junction?
Malfunction Junction is the local nickname for the interchange where I-65 meets I-20/59 just northwest of downtown Birmingham. Its tight, weaving configuration and very heavy traffic make it one of the most congested spots in the state, which is why the Birmingham preset keeps a close eye on it.
Are these cameras useful in winter weather?
They can be very useful. Alabama rarely sees snow, and the South has little equipment to clear it, so a rare ice storm can paralyze the interstates, as the January 2014 event did across Birmingham. In those conditions the cameras work best as a simple stay-or-go check: if you see white or glassy pavement, it is usually wiser to wait.
Do the cameras help during tornado season or hurricanes?
Indirectly, yes. Alabama sits in Dixie Alley and sees severe spring and fall tornadoes, and the Gulf coast faces hurricanes. The cameras will not forecast a storm, but they show you what the road looks like right now, including heavy rain, debris or evacuation traffic on routes like I-10 and I-65. Always pair them with official warnings and ALGO Traffic alerts.
How current are the images?
The feeds are live snapshots that refresh frequently, so you are seeing close to real-time conditions. An occasional camera may go offline for maintenance or a feed hiccup. For confirmed closures and incidents, cross-check the camera view against ALGO Traffic's alerts before you rely on it.
