About this map

This map gathers the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) live road cameras into one fast, searchable view, pulled straight from the state's official 511 system at 511mt.net. Montana's cameras are a little different from most states': nearly all of them are part of MDT's Road Weather Information System (RWIS), so almost every camera sits right beside a real roadside weather sensor. That means the picture you're looking at comes with genuine on-the-road numbers — not a reading from the nearest airport miles away.

Because each camera is co-located with an RWIS station, you can see air temperature, pavement (surface) temperature, the road surface condition (dry, wet, trace moisture, or ice), and wind alongside the image. For winter driving in Montana that combination is gold: a road that looks merely wet but sits at 28°F on the pavement is very likely iced, and the cameras let you catch that before you're on it. Coverage is sparse across the open country but dense exactly where it matters — the interstates and the mountain passes. You'll find cameras along I-90 (Billings–Bozeman–Butte–Missoula to Lookout Pass at the Idaho line, climbing over Bozeman Pass and Homestake Pass), I-15 (the Canadian border down through Shelby, Great Falls, Helena, and Butte over the Continental Divide), I-94 across the eastern plains (Billings–Miles City–Glendive to North Dakota), US-2 along the northern-tier Hi-Line over Marias Pass by Glacier, US-93 up the Flathead toward Kalispell, and US-12 over MacDonald Pass.

Use the area presets to jump straight to your region, search for a highway, town, or pass, save the cameras you check most as favorites, and read the on-road weather alongside each feed. In a state of severe winters — passes that require chains or close, ground blizzards and whiteouts out on the eastern plains, extreme cold, and black ice — a quick look at the camera and its pavement temperature is the difference between rolling and waiting it out.

Statewide

Every MDT camera across Montana in one view — the full run of I-90 east to west, I-15 north to south over the Continental Divide, I-94 across the eastern plains, and US-2 along the Hi-Line, plus the mountain passes between. Because the cameras are RWIS sites, each pairs a road image with real on-road temperature, surface, and wind. The best at-a-glance read before any long, weather-exposed Montana drive.

Billings

Cameras around Montana's largest city where I-90 and I-94 meet, plus US-87 and US-212. This is the hub where eastbound travelers transition from the mountains to the open plains, and a good place to gauge whether the I-94 run toward Miles City is clear or blowing snow.

Bozeman & Butte

The high heart of I-90: Bozeman Pass (about 5,700 ft, east of Bozeman toward Livingston) and Homestake Pass (6,329 ft near Butte, the highest point on the entire 3,020-mile interstate, right on the Continental Divide). Both ice fast and see chain-ups and closures in winter — check the RWIS pavement temperature before you climb. Also the gateway toward Yellowstone via US-191.

Missoula

Cameras around Missoula where I-90 meets US-93 and US-12, running west toward Lookout Pass (4,710 ft) at the Idaho line — the high point of I-90 between Seattle and Missoula and a Pacific/Mountain time-zone divide. Watch the I-90 climb, the US-12 approach toward Lolo, and the US-93 corridor south through the Bitterroot.

Helena & Great Falls

The state-capital and central-Montana hub along I-15 and US-12, including MacDonald Pass (6,312 ft on US-12, the steepest year-round highway in Montana at an 8% grade) between Helena and the west. Coverage reaches US-87, US-89, and the I-15 run through Wolf Creek Canyon and Craig — windy, ice-prone country.

Flathead & Glacier

Cameras up the US-93 corridor through the Flathead — Polson, Kalispell, Whitefish, Columbia Falls — and along US-2 toward West Glacier and Marias Pass (5,213 ft) on the southern edge of Glacier National Park. A scenic but storm-prone region where snow and ice arrive early and linger.

The Hi-Line (US-2)

The long northern-tier route across the top of the state — Cut Bank, Shelby, Havre, Malta, Glasgow, and Wolf Point — paralleling the BNSF railway and the Canadian border. Cameras here are sparse but vital: this is wide-open, wind-raked country where ground blizzards and whiteouts can drop visibility to nothing and extreme cold settles in for days.

Eastern Montana

I-94 across the plains from Billings through Forsyth, Miles City, and Glendive to the North Dakota line, plus US-12 and US-2 spurs. The terrain is flat and exposed, so the headline winter hazard is blowing and drifting snow — ground blizzards that close the interstate even when little new snow is falling. The cameras show you whether the road is visible before you commit.

Tips for using Montana road cameras

  • Montana's cameras are RWIS sites, so don't just look at the picture — read the numbers beside it. A road that looks wet but shows a pavement (surface) temperature near or below freezing is very likely iced. The surface-condition readout (dry, wet, trace moisture, ice) is your single best winter tell.
  • Before crossing Homestake Pass (6,329 ft) or Bozeman Pass on I-90, check the summit camera and its pavement temperature first — both sit thousands of feet above the towns you're leaving and routinely require chains or close in a storm.
  • On the open eastern plains along I-94 and the Hi-Line (US-2), the danger is ground blizzards and whiteouts, not just snowfall. Use the cameras to judge whether the road is actually visible — blowing snow can close the interstate on a day with clear skies.
  • MacDonald Pass (US-12, 6,312 ft) is the steepest year-round highway in Montana at an 8% grade; check its camera before the Helena–Missoula crossing in winter, and remember high passes like Lost Trail (US-93, 7,014 ft) and Marias (US-2) ice over long after the valleys dry out.
  • Save your regular cameras as favorites — your stretch of I-90, a pass you cross often, or the Hi-Line town nearest home — so they load with one tap, complete with their on-road weather, next time.
  • Cameras and their RWIS readings are a real-time gut check, but Montana closes passes and interstates fast — always confirm closures, chain requirements, and gate status with MDT at 511mt.net or by dialing 511 in Montana before you travel.

Montana road camera guides

In-depth guides to the highways, passes and destinations we cover here.

Frequently asked questions

How often do the Montana MDT cameras update?
The cameras are part of MDT's RWIS network and post a new image roughly every 15 minutes during daylight hours, so you're seeing a recent still rather than continuous video. Reload the camera you're checking for the latest frame, and note that many sites are dark or not refreshing overnight.
Why do Montana's cameras show weather right on the road?
Because nearly every MDT camera is co-located with a Road Weather Information System (RWIS) sensor, each one reports genuine on-road conditions — air temperature, pavement (surface) temperature, the surface state (dry, wet, trace moisture, or ice), and wind. That's far more useful for judging winter ice and pass conditions than a reading from a distant airport.
Which Montana roads and highways do the cameras cover?
Coverage concentrates on the interstates and mountain passes: I-90 across the state (over Bozeman Pass, Homestake Pass, and out to Lookout Pass at the Idaho line), I-15 north–south from the Canadian border through Great Falls, Helena, and Butte over the Continental Divide, I-94 east toward North Dakota, US-2 along the Hi-Line over Marias Pass, US-93 through the Flathead, and US-12 over MacDonald Pass. The network is sparse statewide but dense where conditions matter most.
Can I check Montana's mountain passes before I drive?
Yes. The Bozeman & Butte preset covers Homestake Pass (6,329 ft, the highest point on all of I-90) and Bozeman Pass, Missoula reaches Lookout Pass (4,710 ft, the high point of I-90 between Seattle and Missoula), Helena & Great Falls includes MacDonald Pass (6,312 ft on US-12), and Flathead & Glacier covers Marias Pass (5,213 ft on US-2). All can require chains or close in winter, so check the summit camera and its pavement temperature first.
How do I tell if a Montana road is icy from the camera?
Pair the image with the RWIS readout shown alongside it. If the surface condition reads ice or trace moisture, or the pavement (surface) temperature is at or below freezing while the road looks wet, treat it as icy. This on-road weather is exactly why Montana's RWIS cameras are so good for winter trip planning.
How cold does it really get on these routes?
Bitterly cold. Montana holds the lower-48 record low of -70°F, set at Rogers Pass on MT-200 in January 1954, and extreme cold is a real hazard on the Hi-Line and across the eastern plains. The cameras' air-temperature readings give you a true sense of conditions before you head out into it.
Can I save my most-used Montana cameras?
Yes. Tap the favorite icon on any camera to keep your regular checks together — your stretch of I-90, a pass you cross often, or a Hi-Line town — so they're one tap away, with their on-road weather, on your next trip.
Does this site cover neighboring states and provinces?
Yes. Alongside Montana, you can check live cameras for Wyoming (/wydot-cameras), Idaho, North Dakota (/nddot-cameras), and Alberta (/alberta-cameras), so you can plan a trip toward Yellowstone, across the Hi-Line, or over the Canadian border from one place.
