About the Eisenhower Tunnel
When Colorado asks "is I‑70 open," this is the stretch it means: the mountain corridor from Floyd Hill west of Denver, up through Idaho Springs and Georgetown to the Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel — 11,158 feet under the Continental Divide, the highest point on the entire Interstate system — then down to Silverthorne and Dillon, past Copper Mountain and over 10,662‑foot Vail Pass into Vail.
The drive is ski country's main street: Loveland at the tunnel's east portal (exit 216), Arapahoe Basin and Keystone via US‑6 from the Silverthorne/Dillon exits, Breckenridge down CO‑9 through Frisco (exit 203), Copper Mountain (exit 195) and Vail (exit 176). That geography writes the traffic pattern — on peak winter Saturdays the tunnel meters westbound traffic into 90‑minute queues by 9 a.m., and Sunday afternoons jam the eastbound side coming home.
The banner above the cameras reads CDOT's live COtrip feed, the same data behind the roadside chain-law signs. Colorado's rules arrive as numbered codes: the Passenger Traction Law (Code 15 — snow-rated tires, 4WD/AWD with adequate tread, or chains) and the Passenger Chain Law (Code 16 — chains or traction devices on every passenger vehicle, the last step before closure), plus the commercial chain laws (Codes 17 and 18); commercial drivers must carry chains on this corridor from September 1 through May 31. The cameras run east to west in drive order, Floyd Hill to Vail.
Driving the Eisenhower Tunnel in winter
- Leave Denver before about 6:30 a.m. on winter Saturdays — tunnel metering can add 90 minutes by mid-morning, and the cameras show the queue forming long before the apps do.
- Code 15 often activates corridor-wide before snow reaches your windshield — check the banner, not the sky, and remember the fines apply if you spin out unequipped.
- Vail Pass chains up and closes separately from the tunnel — a clear tunnel frame doesn't clear the whole drive, so scan the Vail Pass summit and chain-station cameras before committing past Copper Mountain.
- Hazmat trucks are banned from the tunnel and cross 11,990‑foot Loveland Pass on US‑6 instead; when that closes, CDOT escorts them through the tunnel in convoys — the sudden, unexplained holds the cameras sometimes show.
- Continuing west past Vail? Glenwood Canyon closes for rockfall and mudslides with little warning — check the I‑70 Mountains map at /cdot-cameras/i-70-mountains, and confirm everything official on COtrip.org or by dialing 511.
